Facilitating Access to Global Observing Systems Data and Information

Accessing Data from the Observing System Programs

GOSIC provides access to data through program "data access" pages  or through searches of the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD). The former is used to access data and data products from particular observing system programs. The latter is used to locate datasets of given variables. For information on the GCMD route see the dataset registry page.

Access The Operational Observing Systems

The observing systems are made up of a number of end-to-end data management systems that collect data, quality assess it, and produce interpretations and analyses referred to as data products.

This component of GOSIC is provided for users to access the data and products on a continuing basis in the centers that prepare and hold them.

GOSIC has a data access page for more than 70 observing system programs or elements. For an example of a data access page see the GTNet Data Access page. To see the types of information that is included on data access pages see the data access page template.

Links to the data access pages are provided by yellow "data & information" buttons on three pages in GOSIC that present the initial or integrated observing systems (IOSs) of the Global Observing Systems. These three pages are found under GCOS, GOOS, and GTOS in the "Access Data" paragraph on the home page.

For an example of an IOS page see the GCOS Integrated Observing System.

Unique Approaches to this Requirement:

  • Centers will be asked to maintain a web page on behalf of the Global Observing Systems (GCOS, GOOS and GTOS) that will facilitate access to Global Observing Systems data and products. A single simple web page in each center based on a common template is envisioned to alleviate the difficulties of navigating complex and diverse organizational web sites. The Committee on IODE has agreed to this.
  • Centers are also expected to maintain inventory information on line to provide information on data distributions in space and time. GOSIC will only provide higher level directory level descriptions of data holdings. This is both a practical and a resource matter. The centers holding the data have the most up to date copy and also generally already have software to produce spatial and temporal displays of the data. (See MEDS inventory example)
