Search the GOSIC Dataset Registry
The GOSIC dataset registry contains information about datasets that are developed and managed by the programs and elements that compose the Global Observing Systems (GCOS, GOOS and GTOS), or have been identified as relevant to the needs of these Global Observing Systems and their users. In addition to containing information and metadata the registry contains links and/or contact information that can be used to access the various data centers to obtain the data and data products and analyses that are being made available by the center.
The registry consists of two parts:
-
The GOSIC Database. The first part is a database that contains basic information about the Global Observing Systems (GCOS, GOOS and GTOS) datasets. Several reports are available from this database that provide overviews of these Global Observing Systems datasets, and relate them to the observing system programs or elements.
-
The GCMD Database. The second part of the registry is operated by the NASA Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) and consists of full meta data records in the NASA DIF format with more detailed information about the data sets.
Users can browse either the GOSIC or NASA databases to find data of interest. If the user is looking for data collected by a certain element of one of the observing systems, then the GOSIC database will be of more interest. If the user is looking for certain parameters observed in a given area over a given time then the search capabilities of the GCMD will be necessary. |

The GOSIC Database
- List the datasets in the GOSIC Global Observing Systems (GCOS, GOOS and GTOS) dataset registry.
-
List the data sets by program element. (This search should allow selection of one of the observing systems, then present a list of program elements for the OS from the database and from which one can select one and obtain a listing of the datasets. eg for GTOS, select GTNet and get all the associated datasets.)
- List the datasets by keyword. (This search should allow selection of one of the observing systems, then present a list of keywords for the OS from the database and from which one can select one and obtain a listing of the datasets. eg for GTOS, select ACSAD or "terrestrial climate" and get all the associated datasets.)

The GCMD Database
Search the NASA GCMD by parameter, spatial, or temporal criteria.
Instructions on how to register a dataset with GCMD.
To use the GCMD "free text search":
- click the icon on the left,
- then Choose "Full Text" of a database field from the first column.
-
Then type in some free text in the box as a search string.
- Use the map applet in the second column to restrict the search to an area.
- Use the third column to restrict the search to a given time period.
-
Medium-fast speed:
To use the GCMD "hierarchical keyword search":
- click the icon on the left, then
- Choose keywords as appropriate to the desired search.
- The small circular icon with the "i" provides definitions
-
Follow the instructions on subsequent pages
