Global Ocean data Assimilation Experiement (GODAE) Data Access

Data Availability: Global Ocean data Assimilation Experiement (GODAE) products and data are available online. GODAE is a global system of observations, communications, modelling and assimilation, that will deliver regular, comprehensive information on the state of the oceans, in a way that will promote and engender wide utility and availability of this resource for maximum benefit to the community. Information below has been taken off the GODAE web site.

Access Data & Information

The outputs of GODAE come from all GODAE partners. These data and products are distinctive and unique contributions to research and operational communities. GODAE appreciates and anticipates the broad needs of the user communities and is working towards desirable outcomes and requisite products by matching availability of data & products and their utility.

Quality Control

One of the unique and most important aspects of GODAE is the characterization of the errors and uncertainties in the outputs – both, data and forecasts. This is a fundamental component of any ocean data assimilation system. It is likely that decisions made at the quality control step can affect the success or failure of the entire system. Accepting erroneous data can cause an incorrect analysis, while rejecting extreme data can miss important events and anomalous features. More

Data Management

The success of GODAE depends upon the availability of high quality data management services. GODAE modelers and product generators require real time observations, air-sea surface forcing fields, and historical data and products.

Ocean observations are collected entirely as a result of national effort. International coordination and agreement of standards is an important requirement for efficient data distribution. Most of the in-situ ocean observing activites are now coordinated through the Ocean Observation Group of the IOC/WMO Joint Technology Commision for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology, JCOMMOPS. Ocean satellite activities are the object of coordination by the Committee on Earth Observing Satellites, CEOS, the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites, CGMS and the Integrated Global Observing Strategy - Partners, IGOS Partnership.

Few national agreements exist for sustained global ocean observations.
