Facilitating Access to Global Observing Systems Data and Information

GODAE Program Overview

The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) is a program of the joint IOC/WMO Ocean Observation Panel for Climate (OPPC) with the objectives, as quoted on the GODAE home page, to:

  • Apply state-of-the art ocean models and assimilation methods to produce short-range open-ocean forecasts, boundary conditions to extend predictability of coastal and regional subsystems, and initial conditions for climate forecast models.
  • Provide global ocean analyses for developing improved understanding of the oceans, improved assessments of the predictability of ocean variability, and as a basis for improving the design and effectiveness of a global ocean observing system.

Program Management

In early 1997, the concept of the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) was developed in the belief that attracting the resources necessary for an adequate long-term global ocean observing system for monitoring the ocean depends upon a clear demonstration of the feasibility and value of such a system.  GODAE aims to make ocean monitoring and prediction routine in a manner similar to weather forecasting.

The anticipated outcomes for GODAE include improved coastal, open ocean and climate forecasts; a more responsive efficient and sustainable system for data assembly and distribution; an improved foundation for oceanic research with enhanced partnerships between the operational and research communities; and an enhanced, but cost-effective and sustainable ocean observing system.

The GODAE projects are:

  • Argo
  • High Resolution SST - Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP)

Implementation Phases

GODAE will evolve through phased development from 1998 to 2007.  The main phases are:

1998-1999: Concept Development. Refine scope, promote the experiment, develop international cooperation and participation and set up an organization for GODAE.  The ARGO project - an essential component of GODAE- is being successfully implemented through international cooperation.

2000-2002: Development Phase. Development and test of GODAE national and international components with main focus on data, information and coordination of national activities.

2003-2005: Demonstration Phase. Real-time demonstrations of the viability of candidate systems.

2006-2007: Consolidation and Transition Phase. Final phase. Consolidation and establishment of permanent systems. Transition of technology to operational systems.
