GOOS Regional Alliance for the South Pacific - Alianza Regional del GOOS para el Pacifico Sudeste (GRASP)
Program Overview
Countries and regions around the world are encouraged to form institutional regional alliances in order to better implement the Global Ocean Observation System (GOOS). The GOOS Regional Alliance for the South Pacific (GRASP) is a regional development involving countries of western South America and plays an important role in the establishment of a global network. The countries that are involved in GRASP develop their systems in agreement with the Principles of GOOS.

Program Management
In the process of creating the South Pacific GOOS (GRASP), a letter of intent was written on May 31, 2003, which laid out the purpose and goals of GRASP. GRASP was officially formed during a meeting on October 26-28, 2005 and was jointly summoned by The Secretariat of Comision Permanente Del Pacifico Sur (CPPS) and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). The Plan of Action for GRASP was constructed by the CPPS during the meeting. GRASP is overseen by a General Secretary, an Undersecretary, and Economic Director, and a Scientific Director. The GRASP Secretariat is located in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Program Goals
GRASP has laid out the following program goals:
- To regionally coordinate and optimize a suitable use of resources;
- To study systems of coastal currents of the East Pacific and form a regional perspective;
- Exchange data and make data available for users;
- To accentuate the field of operational oceanography as an important part of operational meteorology;
- To gain better access to international investigation projects (such as Argo);
- To facilitate access to information about the investigation of the coast of the region; and
- To study the ocean variability on a 20-40 day scale
