Facilitating Access to Global Observing Systems Data and Information

MedGOOS Program Overview

The Mediterranean Global Ocean Observing System (MedGOOS) is an informal association founded under the auspices of the UNESCO/Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to provide a concerted approach to the planning and implementation of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) in the Mediterranean. MedGOOS is a GOOS regional program.

Program Management

MedGOOS aims to facilitate the development of an operational ocean observing and forecasting system at a regional to coastal scale to the benefit of a wide group of users in the region. MedGOOS focuses on the regional priorities for operational ocean forecasting and marine meteorology, addresses the related economic and social implications, and guides and assists the riparian states to the harmonious implementation of the Mediterranean ocean observing and forecasting system built on existing elements and based on principles of co-development, co-ownership and sharing of benefits. MedGOOS will ensure the upgrading of national systems to the same level of expertise and infra-structure and will stimulate the necessary pre-operational R&D to ensure that GOOS is fully effective when it is eventually established in the region.

The MedGOOS Projects

  • Mediterranean network to Assess and Upgrade Monitoring and Forecasting Activity in the basin (MAMA): MAMA is a project for a Mediterranean network to assess and upgrade monitoring and forecasting activity in the basin. MAMA involves building a basin-wide network for modeling and forecasting, identifying significant gaps in the basin, building capacities, through exchange of personnel, designing an initial forecasting system and raising awareness. MAMA involves 31 research and government agencies from 26 countries.
  • The Mediterranean Forecasting Systems Pilot Project (MFSPP) develops a strategy for the implementation of a Mediterranean Forecasting System aimed at the prediction of the marine ecosystem variability in the coastal areas up to the primary producers and from the time scales of days to months to sustain an healthy coastal environment and its management.
  • Mediterranean Data Archaeology (MEDAR/MEDATLAS II) Project: The overall objective of the project is to make available a comprehensive data product of temperature, salinity and bio-chemical data in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, through a wide co-operation of the Mediterranean countries.
  • The Mediterranean Directory of Marine Scientists and Professionals (MeDir) is a database product developed on similar lines to GLODIR under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and with the support of MedGOOS (the Global Ocean Observing System for the Mediterranean). This free and searchable database aims to bring together scientists and professionals working in the Mediterranean region so as to establish a basin wide network on marine research and related issues.
