Pacific Islands GOOS Program Overview

Pacific Islands GOOS is a GOOS pilot project. Pacific Islands GOOS (PI GOOS) is under development. Note: the name was changed by the PacificGOOS Steering Committee in October 2002 from PacificGOOS to Pacific Islands GOOS.

The Pacific Islands GOOS Program

Pacific Islands GOOS was founded in 1998. The Regional GOOS Capacity Building Meeting held the same year, established the South Pacific Applied Geosciences Commission (SOPAC) as the interim secretariat for Pacific Islands GOOS.

In 2000, the Regional Pacific Islands GOOS Coastal Workshop developed 4 Coastal GOOS pilot project concepts, raised awareness of the International Argo initiative amongst Pacific Islands Countries and Territories (PICTs) and introduced the concept of blanket concurrence to deploy Argo floats with the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of (PICTs).

At the 2002 Pacific Islands GOOS Steering Committee Meeting it was announced that 500 Argo floats are to be deployed in the PICs EEZs.
