Facilitating Access to Global Observing Systems Data and Information

Data Access Matrices

  • Search for Global Observing System LAND data by Variable

GTOS Data and Metadata Access Matrix (in process of being updated) Users can access the GTOS metadata and data in the NASA Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) and the GTOS Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring Sites (TEMS) T.Sites under 'Variables' for each of the topics in the Matrix based on the GHOST hierarchical strategy. The hierarchy divides into five tiers, each with unique characteristics and roles, although existing facilities often straddle more than one tier. The concept is applicable to the three main areas which GHOST is concerned with - the land surface, freshwater ecosystems and ice surfaces - each with its own hierarchy, but all share tier five. Users can also access Essential Climate variables (ECV) data and information for the various topics in the Matrix.

  • Search Data by GCOS Essential Climate Variables (ECV)

ECV Data Access Matrix The GCOS Essential Climate Variables (ECV) are required to support the work of the UNFCCC and the IPCC. All ECV are technically and economically feasible for systematic observation. It is these variables for which international exchange is required for both current and historical observations. Additional variables required for research purposes are not included in this table. It is emphasized that the ordering within the table is simply for convenience and is not an indicator of relative priority. Currently, there are 44 ECVs plus soil moisture recognized as an emerging ECV.
