- GTOS Data and Metadata Access Matrix
Users can access Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS) data and metadata in the NASA Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) and the GTOS Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring Sites (TEMS) under 'Variables' for each of the topics in the Matrix based on the GHOST hierarchical strategy. The hierarchy divides into five tiers, each with unique characteristics and roles, although existing facilities often straddle more than one tier. The concept is applicable to the three main areas which GHOST is concerned with - the land surface, freshwater ecosystems and ice surfaces - each with its own hierarchy, but all share tier five. Users can also access Terrestrial Essential Climate Variables (ECV) data and information in the GCOS ECV Data & Information Access Matrix (see below).
- GCOS Essential Climate Variables (ECV) Data & Information Access Matrix (in process of being updated) The GCOS Essential Climate Variables (ECV) are required to support the work of the UNFCCC and the IPCC. All ECVs are technically and economically feasible for systematic observation. It is these variables for which international exchange is required for both current and historical observations. It is emphasized that the ordering within the table is simply for convenience and is not an indicator of relative priority. There are currently 50 ECVs.
