  AMAP Program Overview

From its inception, the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP)  was conceived as a process for integrating both monitoring and assessment activities in relation to pollution issues, to provide information for producing integrated assessment reports on the status and trends of the conditions of Arctic ecosystems; identifying possible causes for changing conditions; detecting emerging problems, their possible causes, and the potential risk to Arctic ecosystems including indigenous peoples and other Arctic residents; recommending actions required to reduce risks to Arctic ecosystems.

Program Management

A Finnish proposal to convene a conference on the protection of the Arctic environment led to preparatory meetings in 1989.  In 1992 Environment Ministers from the Eight Arctic rim countries (Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Soviet Union, and the United States) met in Finland for the First Arctic Ministerial Conference.  One outcome of this conference was the adoption of the Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy (AEPS).

The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program, (AMAP) was established in 1991 to implement certain components of the AEPS.

AMAP reports to the Arctic Council and Ministers through their Senior Arctic Officials (SAOs) and is supported by a permanent Secretariat located in Oslo, Norway.
