 CERN Program Overview

The Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) is supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). CERN mission is to "promote ecosystem conservation and improvement, environmental quality enhancement and agricultural development, and to advance the studies in ecology and inter-related disciplines. It's mandate is to monitor, research and to provide models on the typical ecosystem in China".

Program Management

The Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (About CERN) was established in 1988, is funded by the Chinese Government and the World Bank. CERN has a synthesis research centre and five disciplinary sub-centers: water, soils, atmosphere, biology, and aquatic centers. Their research network oversee 36 field stations that monitors agriculture, forestry, grassland, desert, lake and marine ecosystems.

The management system comprise of a Steering Committee, a Scientific Advisory Committee and a Science Committee. The Steering Committee, a decision-making body led by CAS vice president Chen Yiyu, is responsibility for the operation of CERN, monitoring, research, demonstration and policy consultation. The acting body under the Steering Committee is the coordinating office, responsible for day-to-day management. More information about CERN management can be found in their website.

The CERN goals are:

  • To monitor environmental change
  • To study the structure, function, dynamics and management of ecosystems
  • To provide the managerial models of sustainable use of ecosystems at the local level
  • To provide the scientific basis for decision-making process at the provincial and national levels
