CGIAR Data Access

 Data availability:  Data are available at most of the 15 Research Centers supported by Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).  These centers are autonomous institutions.  CGIAR, holds in public trust for the future, the world's largest collection of plant genetic resources (over 600,000 accessions of more than 3,000 crop, forage, and pasture species).

Access the Databases at the CGIAR Research Centers

1. CIAT  (International Centre for Tropical Agriculture - Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical) Cali, Columbia. [English/Spanish]

   Data policy: The plant genetic resources conserved by CIAT are a component of the world "designate collection" of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Under a 1994 agreement with FAO, CIAT makes its germplasm available free of charge, upon , to farmers, farmer associations, breeders, agronomists, extension agencies, universities, and biodiversity institutes with a clearly articulated need.

2. CIFOR (Center for International Forestry Research)

   Data Policy: Access to data are possible only via mail, fax or email requests.

   • TROPIS (Tree Growth and Permanent Plot Information System). Data on taxa, locations, treatments, and other information on trees.
   • CIMAT database: Developed by the Adaptive Collaborative Management (ACM). A CIFOR web site.

3. CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center - Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maiz y Trigo) Mexico City, Mexico [English/Spanish]

   • CIMMYT's Natural Resources Group (NRG) and Maize Program produced the Africa Maize Research Atlas, Asia Maize Research Atlas, and the Latin American Maize Research Atlas. Stand-alone, CD-ROM software that combines powerful and flexible GIS tools with preloaded data on climate, soils, elevation, population, land use and maize mega-environments for Sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia, Central and South America.
   • ECONB: (CIMMYT Economics Program) Contains world maize and wheat production data, including economic and social indicators. For internal use only.

4. CIP (International Center for Potato Research - Central Internacional de la Papa Lima, Peru [English/Spanish only]. CIP databases are available online, which includes the following:

   • SINGER (genetic resource collections): CGIAR genetic resources databases, including information on CIP's collection of potato, sweetpotato, and Andean root and tuber crops
   • World Potato Atlas: Information about world potato production with emphasis on developing countries
   • DIVA GIS: Tools (downloadable software), geo-referenced databases, and thematic maps related to genetic resource management.
   • Library Asscessions: Catalog of CIP Library accessions on potato, sweetpotato, and Andean roots and tubers from 1972 to present, including CIP staff publications. Database searchable by author, title, publication year, keyword, and language.
   • Publications: Catalog of CIP Publications (books, manuals, reports, working papers, and training materials distributed for sale by CIP) on potato, sweetpotato, and Andean roots and tubers. Database searchable by author, title, publication year, keyword, and language.
   • World Potato Species Atlas: Distribution maps of all currently recognized wild potato species.

5. ICARDA (International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, Aleppo, Syrian Arab republic [English]

   • Arid climate cereal and legume varieties(barley, bread and durum wheat, kabuli chickpea, lentil, faba bean, peas and forage legumes) data are available online.

6. WorldFish Centre Penang, Malaysia [English/Native languages]

   • FishBase: Online Relational database with information on 27,000 species. Also available in CD-ROM format.
   • ReefBase: Online global database on coral reefs and their resources. Includes online GIS maps.
   • TrawlBase: a system for organizing, storing, retrieving and exchanging a huge amount of data from past trawls in the seas of Asia.
   • One Fish Portal: a unique integrated online global repository of fisheries and aquatic research and development projects.

7. World Agroforestry Centre Nairobi, Kenya

   • Agroforestree Database: a species reference and selection guide for agroforestry trees.
   • Botanic Nomenclature: a compilation of the taxonomic status of over 8000 woody and herbaceous taxa found in agroforest ecosystems.
   • Tree Slides Database
   • Tree Seed Suppliers Database: this data is also available on CD-ROM and in a book version.

8. ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics)

   • SAT Electronic Library: an online service to CGIAR's scientific community and the partners from National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS). The SAT Electronic Library consolidates various resources and services available both in-house and on the Internet. The various sections of the SATeLibrary are SATSource Database, SRLS Database, SCIRUS Search, SWETSWise Searcher, Agricultural Sites on the Web, and Full-Text publications.

9. IWMI (International Water Management Institute) [English/Documents also available in German, French, Dutch, Norwegian, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish and Russian]

   • Climate Atlas Web Query (CAWQuer) service creates on-line climate summaries for user-specified locations. User registration Required.
   • Eco-Hydrological Database: focuses on management of specific information pertaining to various aspects of freshwater ecosystems' functioning, requirements and management.

10. IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute)

    Data policy: Data is available online per request. Requested datasets are for the use of the requestor only and cannot be used by others without the permission of IFPRI. Proper citation is required; citation information is included with the documentation of each dataset. IFPRI encourages the use of these datasets, but emphasizes that many of them contain "raw" data files.

    • IFPRI Datasets: browse through the datasets available on Household, Community and Institution level Surveys and Social Accounting Matrices. Data are available online per request (request form).
    • Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) was initially managed by the International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR) which has since then been taken over by IFPRI. The ASTI Timeseries Database provides access to agricultural R&D indicators for developing countries in tabular format.

11. IITA (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture) Ibadan , Nigeria

    • IITA Catalogues and Databases Directory: access to publications related to IITA's research.
    • Statistical Database: access to authoritative agriculture websites based on research related to that of IITA.

12. ILRI  (International Livestock Research Institute) Nairobi, Kenya

    • Library Database: presents all publications which have been published by ILRI staff members, ILRI’s corporate documents, and extracted records from CABI and AGRIS based on ILRI’s mandate.
    • AGRIS: provides bibliographic coverage of agricultural science and technology literature world-wide.
    • FAOSTAT: provides access to over 3 million time-series and cross sectional data relating to food and agriculture. FAOSTAT contains data for 200 countries and more than 200 primary products and inputs, just in its core.
    • CountrySTAT: a statistical framework and applied information system for analysis and policy-making to organise, integrate and disseminate statistical data and metadata on food and agriculture coming from different sources. CountrySTAT gathers and harmonises scattered institutional statstical information so that information tables become compatible with each other at the country level and with data at the international level.

13. Biodiversity International (formally known as the IPGRI) Rome, Italy [English/Documents also available in Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian]

    • Germplasm Databases: Includes access to data about cereals, forages, industrial crops, legumes, oil crops, roots and tubers, temperate fruits, tropical fruits, vegetables, international multicrop databases, national multicrop databases.
    • Bibliographical Databases: Access to bibliographical information related to the research conducted by Biodiversity International.
    • Image Database: Selected images related to agricultural biodiversity as well as images of neglected and underutilized species can be accessed in this database.

14. IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) Los Banos, The Phillipines

    Data policy: You are hereby granted a nonexclusive, nontransferable, limited license to view and use information retrieved from this site provided solely for your personal, informational, non-commercial purposes, and provided you do not remove or obscure the copyright notice or other notices. In no event shall materials from this site be stored in any information storage and retrieval system without prior written permission from IRRI.

    • Atlas of Rice: Illustrates rice area by type of culture for South, Southeast, and East Asia, and provides information about the different rice ecosystems and relevant statistics in rice production.
    • Rice Around the World: Information about where rice is grown around the world.
    • World Rice Statistics (WRS): presents comprehensive time series information related to rice. Data on rice production, trade, consumption, inputs, prices, and other related information are compiled from international and national statistical sources, personal communications, and from responses to questionnaires sent by IRRI's Social Sciences Division.

15. WARDA (West Africa Rice Development Association)

    • Technical Reports which include some data on rice statistics and the genetic evaluation of rice in Africa.
