Facilitating Access to Global Observing Systems Data and Information

 FLUXNET Program Overview

Fluxnet is a global network of micrometeorological tower sites that use eddy covariance methods to measure the exchanges of carbon dioxide ( CO2), water vapor, and energy between terrestrial ecosystem and atmosphere.

Program Management

FLUXNET is a global network of micrometeorological tower sites that use eddy covariance methods to measure the exchanges of carbon dioxide ( CO2), water vapor, and energy between terrestrial ecosystem and atmosphere. At present, over 200 tower sites are operating on a long-term and continuous basis. Researchers also collect data on site vegetation, soil, hydrologic, and meteorological characteristics at the tower sites.

FLUXNET's goals are to understand the mechanisms controlling the exchanges of CO2, water vapor and energy across a spectrum of time and space scales. FLUXNET also provides ground information for validating estimates of net primary productivity, evaporation, and energy absorption that are being generated by sensors on the NASA TERRA satellite.

FLUXNET also provides information to FLUXNET investigators and the public. FLUXNET data are available at the ORNL DAAC. Data include monthly and annual heat, water vapor, and CO2 flux, gap-filled flux products, ecological site data, and remote sensing products.

The program is managed by the FLUXNET Science Steering Committee and the Programmatic Steering Committee.
