Facilitating Access to Global Observing Systems Data and Information

GT-Net Program Overview

The Global Terrestrial Observing Network (GT-Net) is a network of networks that collect data and information on a number of themes including ecology, the fluxtower network, permafrost, glaciers, hydrology, coastal areas, and mountains. See also the Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring System (TEMS) database. TEMS contains relevant metadata and other information on the monitoring sites that compose GT-Net.

Program Management

The formation of thematic networks has been guided by the Terrestrial Observation Panel for Climate (TOPC) on behalf of Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS) and Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). As a separate initiative regional networks are being developed through GTOS regional programs such as Southern Africa, and Central and Eastern Europe. Development the data management for those programs is done within the programs and coordinated with GT-Net.

Data Collection and Management

GT-Net is the main mechanism for data collection and management for Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS). Data are collected and managed locally or regionally, and coordinated globally through GT-Net and GTOS.

The Networks

GT-Net is a system of observation networks. Each represents an organized data collection program for a particular theme, habitat type or region.

Users

User needs include information on climate change, loss of biodiversity, changes in land quality and pollution and toxicity as major environmental priorities. Users need to address long term problems with food security, land use, fresh water availability, and resource sustainability.

Users at the national and international levels include regulators and those dealing with the requirements of international conventions relative to the environment.
