Program Management
The International Cooperative Program on Integrated Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystem (ICP IM) is a multi-disciplinary integrated monitoring program managed by the United Nation's Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) (Environment and Human Settlement division) and is implemented under the Convention on Long-range Trans-boundary Air Pollution. This convention was ratified in 1979 and fully implemented in 1983 by the UNECE. The ICP IM is under leadership of Sweden and the Program Center (collects and stores data) is at the Finnish Environment Institute.
The ICP IM is part of 6 International Cooperative Programs (ICP):
Data and Information Aspects
The goal of the program is to provide ecosystem impact data reflecting climate and biodiversity changes and depletion of the stratospheric ozone across climatic gradients and geological and eco zone boundaries. The requirement to establish consistent time series for environmental variables in order to provide scientific and statistically reliable data for modeling and decision making is met by:
-
monitoring both biogeochemical trends and biological responses in small (10 - 1000 ha) clearly defined areas
-
seeking to separate the noise of natural variation, including succession, from the signal of anthropogenic disturbance by monitoring natural or semi-natural ecosystems
-
developing and applying tools, e.g. models, for regional assessment and prediction of long-term effects
