TUGUEGARAO CITY: The Cagayan Provincial Government, through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO), held its annual Rescue Olympics in Bangag, Lal-lo on Thursday, April 7th.

The various local DRRMOs in the province took part in the day-long activity.

The Philippine National Police and the Philippine Army also participated in the friendly competition.

Lt. Col. Darwin Sacramed said the Rescue Olympics aim to test the skills of different responders in different emergency situations.

“This will show how capable our disaster workers are and the skills they have learned after several powerful typhoons hit our province,” Sacramed said.

The first Rescue Olympics began after Typhoon “Ulysses” Cagayan hit in November 2020.

Tens of thousands of homes in low-lying areas have been swamped by roof-level flooding, trapping residents on their rooftops while awaiting rescue. Local authorities called it the worst disaster in the region in four decades.

“We always have to be prepared to minimize harm to casualties, to minimize harm, and to prevent harm from occurring,” Sacramed said.

The Rescuelympics were last held during the 2021 Aggao Nac Cagayan celebrations.
