SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has released a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday, June 29th, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Despite some precipitation during the thunderstorms, lightning strikes are possible, especially with the unusually dry wood. Outflowing winds from the storms can exceed 50 miles per hour.
Lightning can create new outbreaks of fire and, when combined with strong outflow winds, can cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain it.
The heat wave will intensify over the next few days at high pressure over the Pacific Northwest. NWS Reno says thunderstorms are more likely to occur near the Sierra Ridge on Monday before expanding to most areas this week.
So far, there are Red Flag Warnings for the Eastern and Southern Sierra for Monday and Tuesday, but not currently for Lake Tahoe. Keep track of possible changes to the forecast.
