Several contestants have said Miami’s search for its next athletic director was a mess, so Brett McMurphy of Action Network HQ.
McMurphy reported that more than 50 board members on the program and multiple donors were involved in the search. Several of the AD nominees told McMurphy that it seemed “everyone is in charge, nobody is in charge”.
One person described the situation of the Hurricanes as Sports illustrated‘s Ross Dellenger as a “complete s — show.”
Miami split from former sporting director Blake James on November 15, two days after the Hurricanes suffered a 31-28 loss to Florida State. James spent 17 years with the program, including eight years as the track and field director.
While the university is looking for a new sporting director, McMurphy said the program will not be fully sold to current Hurricanes football coach Manny Diaz, either. He has set a 21-15 record in three seasons, including a 7-5 mark this season
“You don’t know what to do with Manny [Diaz]. Half want him gone, the other half want him to stay, “Per McMurphy.
Matt Zenitz from on3 Sports tweeted Tuesday Diaz could keep his job.
On Sunday, Diaz told 247Sports that he was focused on his job and saw it as a weekly mission.
“All I know is that we went on a week-long mission every week,” said Diaz. “This week the mission was to defeat Duke. What I’m proud of are the guys in this locker room. I take pride in how everything is in them for this program.
“It’s not the end. It’s the beginning. It’s going to be really, really good. They understand that. You know the mistakes we made this year. We all own it. But to look at the odds we’re each facing Have looked in the eyes week after week and that these guys never flinch and bring them week after week. They are all in. They are invested in the program and they play for each other with the hunger that we are talking about and that will continue throughout the off-season . “
James, who became the Hurricanes Athletic Director in ’13, played a role in Miami’s process of hiring Diaz. Diaz previously worked as a defensive coordinator under former Hurricanes coach Mark Richt. After Richt’s decision to resign on December 20, 2018, Miami made the decision a few hours later to hire Diaz as head coach.
After splitting up with James, Miami President Julio Frenk published a letter stating he planned to be more committed to the state of athletics at the university.
Miami finished the season runner-up in the ACC Coastal Division behind Pitt.
