A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Dane, Columbia and Rock counties Thursday evening.
The warning for Dane and Columbia counties is in effect from 7:06 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., the National Weather Service said. Rock County has a warning until 7:30 p.m. Wind gusts up to 60mph and quarter-size hail are possible in all three counties.
A series of storms stretching from Stoughton to Evansville were moving east at around 6:50 p.m. at 15 mph, the National Weather Service said. At 19:06 a severe gale was over Marshall, moving north at 15 mph.
Hail damage to cars is expected. Roofs, sidings and trees could see wind damage.
“For your protection, go indoors on the bottom floor of a building,” the National Weather Service said.

Tornado leaves Barneveld in ruins in 1984

Shortly after sunrise on June 8, 1984, rescue workers begin a second search of Barneveld to see if anyone else was injured or killed in an F5 tornado. Nine people died and about 100 were injured in the storm, which destroyed most of the Iowa County village. The water tower, which survived unscathed, became a symbol of resilience.

Barns destroyed in 1998

A storm on May 31, 1998 along Highway 113 in Dane blew down two tobacco barns and damaged machinery and other buildings at Virgil and Marietta Ripp’s farm. The Ripps said the storm was so sudden they didn’t have time to go down to their basement, but no one was hurt.

Storm fells trees in 2006

Severe storms swept through the Madison area in the early hours of July 20, 2006, causing a large branch on the Capitol lot to snap off near the corner of Carroll and Mifflin Streets. The tree was later felled, prompting some residents to seek creative ways to commemorate the tree that witnessed Madison’s story.

Maple Bluff was hit hard in 2003

The storms of July 7, 2003 also downed about 100 trees in Maple Bluff, the Madison-area village known for its stately lakefront homes. The storms didn’t cause any injuries, but they knocked out power to about 3,000 homes and businesses, dropped more than 1 inch of rain and hailed 3/4 inch.

Tornadoes sweep through Stoughton in 2005
