Syria – Cold spell (UN OCHA, Reliefweb, CARE, Syrian Meteorological Office, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 20 January 2022)
- Heavy snowfall and very low temperatures have hit camps for internally displaced people (IDPs) across northern Syria (particularly in Aleppo and Idleb governorates) since January 18, causing casualties and damage.
- UN OCHA and CARE report three deaths as of January 19, one in a camp near Qastal Miqdad village, Afrin district, Aleppo governorate, and two others in a camp north of Aleppo city. UN OCHA also reports more than 2,100 people affected and 363 tents damaged in a number of camps in the region, with Abraz camp (Afrin district) being the worst hit.
- Some of the roads to the camps remain closed due to snow accumulation. Heat and bread are reported as the most pressing needs. Humanitarian partners are calling for additional support to be provided for wintering.
- More precipitation is forecast over the next 24 hours over northern Aleppo governorate, while drier conditions are forecast over Idleb governorate.
