Miami may have finished 7-5 last season, but Mario Cristobal’s peers believe he will improve on the Hurricanes in his first season at UM.
The panel of 65 FBS coaches ranked Miami 17th in USA Today’s preseason coach poll released Monday — after UM finished the 2021 season unranked. The Associated Press preseason top 25 will be released on August 15th.
The Hurricanes drew a lot of attention for Cristobal’s first season as head coach. ACC media members picked Miami to win the ACC Coastal Division.
The Hurricanes, who began fall training on Friday, have a chance to prove themselves early in the season. Miami’s third game is against No. 7 Texas A&M.
UM meets two other ranked teams during the season, both ACC enemies, at No. 4 Clemson on Nov. 19 and No. 16 Pittsburgh on Nov. 26.
Miami is one of five ACC teams starting the season as North Carolina State (No. 13) and Wake Forest (No. 19) were also in the top 20. However, a solid pre-season placement does not guarantee success. Last year, coaches ranked the Hurricanes 16th to start the year.
Alabama — not national champion Georgia — is No. 1 in the poll, followed by Ohio State and Georgia.
Clemson is at #4, followed by Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas A&M, Utah, Oklahoma and Baylor to round out the top 10.
