Chennai: The Met department predicts that Chennai will likely experience a thunderstorm with light to moderate rain on Monday and Tuesday. The ministry added, “The sky is likely to be generally cloudy. Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are likely to occur in some parts. “
On Sunday night it rained in many parts of the city. These parts include Kolathur, Vyasarpadi, Korattur, Kilpauk, Anna Nagar, Aminjikarai, Koyambedu, Nungambakkam, Egmore, and Saidapet.
Speaking to the TOI, a Met official said the heavy rain had boosted excess rain numbers for the season since June 1. He also added that the weekend rains were due to the effects of the southwest monsoon.
The showers in the city on Sunday started around 7 p.m. The recorded rain reached around 2 cm in many parts of the city from Saturday to Sunday. Nungambakkam recorded the highest rainfall with 7.7 cm. Maduranthagam and Puzhal also saw heavy rain and recorded 5 cm, while Anna Nagar reached 4 cm. Other parts such as Mariana, Marakkanam and Sriperumbudur recorded 3 cm of rain. Taramani and Kelambakkam recorded 2 cm of rain.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain are forecast in isolated locations over the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni and Salem regions. The forecast for the rest of the state also said that in isolated locations over the counties of Western Ghats, Erode, Tiruppur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruputtur, Ranipet, and Tiruvullur, thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall are likely.
