Showers and thunderstorms could potentially hit the southern suburbs of Chicago on Thursday afternoon, with some of those storms potentially bringing on torrential rains and gusty winds.
A series of thunderstorms is developing in central Illinois on Thursday afternoon, triggering a severe thunderstorm warning that spans parts of Sangamon and Logan counties. New warnings have also been issued for parts of Ford County, with storms moving east and northeast at about 40 kilometers per hour.
As the storms move through the area, they will likely stay south of LaSalle and Grundy counties, but could hit Newton and Jasper counties in northwest Indiana:
Rain is also expected north of these storms, with torrential rains and gusty winds possible, according to the NWS.
According to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, parts of LaSalle, Grundy, Livingston and Kankakee counties are currently at “minor” weather risk on Thursday, while areas in the south, including Springfield and Champaign, are at higher “mild” risk. Risk of severe storms.
A dangerous weather outlook from the National Weather Service predicts showers and thunderstorms will hit the area on Thursday evening, particularly in areas south of Interstate 80.
In some storms, gusts of wind between 60 and 60 miles per hour could be possible, along with torrential rainfall that could trigger local flash floods.
More rain is expected to fall in the same areas on Friday, increasing the likelihood of flooding.
